MARIE RESTITUTA / THE HOSPITAL ON THE EDGE OF THE REICH
Occupation. Prison. Death row. Truth. Betrayal. God?
- the civic name of Helena Kafková – a citizen of the Reich of Czech origin
- a nun in field hospitals
- arrested and sentenced in 1942
- executed in March 1943
- Marie Restituta was beatified in 1998
The trial and execution were accompanied by silence. The authorities did not issue her body because undesirable propaganda was expected, as well as worship of the sentenced nun as a martyr.
“…a heavy, dull blow. The guillotine hitting. Spring of 1943. 30 March, evening.”
The performance was created to commemorate 800 years from the founding of Zábrdovice (which is today a city district of Brno, a former Premonstratesian monastery nearby the Brno city walls) in a site-specific atmosphere of the authentic space in the Virgin Mary Assumption church in Zábrdovice.
